How to make an excellent shaken iced coffee in 5 simple steps
What’s better: Arabica or Robusta?
There’s no one correct answer to this question. It all boils down to taste. Generally, we can say that if you choose an Arabica coffee, you’ll obtain a sweeter more delicate, aromatic flavour, but the froth on the top won’t be as thick and creamy. If instead you choose a Robusta, your coffee will be stronger and more intense, with a perfect froth.
Raw sugar or liquid sugar?
Here the answer is very simple: always choose liquid cane sugar! You can make it at home very easily and you can be sure that it’ll sweeten your coffee to a T. Indeed, with raw sugar, the risk is that it might not melt. Liquid sugar also enables you to obtain an even better, more full-bodied froth.
The order of the ingredients is very important
It might sound silly, but the order in which you put the ingredients into the shaker affects the final result. So: first the ice, then the sugar and then the coffee. This way, there is no risk that the ice will melt too much and excessively dilute the drink.
And what if I don’t have a shaker?
We know that not everyone has a shaker at home. But there are lots of alternative ways of shaking your coffee. They might not produce the same perfect result, but they are a valid alternative. For instance, you can try fitting a smaller glass into a larger one, or using a glass jar with a lid. You can also use a food processor or a smoothie maker, but note that in this case the ice will melt and dilute the drink considerably.
The right glass makes the difference
Want to know how to keep the froth on your shaken coffee perfect for longer? Easy: choose a tall glass (a Martini, or wine glass) and chill it before pouring in the drink.
Long or ristretto?
This is where things get complicated. Many people advise making a long coffee, as is simpler and faster to do. But with two ristretto coffees, the end result will be better. First of all, the final drink will contain less water and, just as importantly, the aromas and flavours of the coffee will be preserved.
So what are the ingredients for shaken iced coffee and how is it made?
- 2 cups of Aiello ristretto espresso coffee
- 7 to 8 ice cubes
- 1 or 2 teaspoons of liquid cane sugar
- 1 shaker
- Prepare the shaker and add the ice cubes and the liquid cane sugar;
- Now make the two ristretto coffees and pour them into the shaker;
- Close quickly and shake for 10 to 15 seconds;
- Now, with the help of a strainer, pour the coffee into a well-iced stem glass. Enjoy your coffee!
