After brewing coffee in a moka or preparing an espresso, many of us throw out the leftover grounds. Nothing could be more wrong.
Just because they can’t be used again in the kitchen doesn’t mean that they don’t have other uses. In fact, their aroma makes them useful in eliminating odours, while the mineral salts that they still contain make an excellent fertiliser. But be sure to preserve the grounds in a dry plastic bag or glass jar so as to avoid the growth of mould.
But let’s look at more specific ways to use coffee grounds!
How can I use leftover coffee grounds?
GARDEN
The aroma of coffee grounds and the substances that they contain are very useful in the garden, especially for:
- keeping insects, ants, and snails away from plants. Just create a circle around the plant to protect it;
- fertilising plants that love particularly acidic soil, like camelias, azaleas, and mimosas;
- growing mushrooms in the comfort of your own home. In fact, coffee grounds make an excellent base, providing mushrooms with the proper amount of moisture and excellent nutrients.
HOME
The aroma of coffee grounds and their small grains are also useful in the home:
- they are great at absorbing surrounding odours. You can try using them to eliminate odours in the refrigerator or closet. If you want to dull the coffee smell, try adding a few drops of vanilla essential oil;
- they eliminate stubborn stains on floors and surfaces thanks to their “granular” texture.
BODY
After the garden and the home, comes the body. In fact, coffee grounds can also be used to:
- remove bad smells like garlic, onion, etc. from your hands
- make a body scrub by mixing it together with olive oil
