Handy, easy to use and perfect for making a quick yet delicious coffee: Nespresso compatible capsules and pods for espresso machines have become so popular that they have revolutionised our habits, to such an extent that today they can be found everywhere you go. And it is this high consumption rate, which is still continuing to grow, that is driving us to wonder how we can recycle coffee capsules and pods in a way that will not have a negative impact on the environment…
Don’t feel guilty, because we can tell you immediately that a solution does exist. There’s absolutely no need to go back to making coffee with the moka machine: in fact, you can savour an excellent espresso with the unique convenience of the single-portion serving while fully respecting Nature. All it takes is a little effort and a few tips to follow, as explained below.
How to recycle plastic capsules
Unfortunately, plastic and aluminium capsules still can’t be thrown whole into the plastic waste collection and this is the main factor that makes recycling these small containers that little bit trickier.
On the other hand, the effort needed to recycle capsules in plastic or aluminium and transform them into a resource for the environment is by no means Herculean. Simply separate the different components: remove the coffee inside and throw it away in the organic waste collection, so that the rest can then be correctly disposed of in the plastic waste.
Disposal of coffee pods in the separated waste collection
Recycling coffee pods is even simpler. With their characteristic round, flat shape E.S.E. pods (Easy Serving Espresso, the international standard used to prepare them) are made with two thin layers of 100% eco-sustainable filter paper, containing a portion of ground, pressed coffee.
This eco-friendly filter paper material is precisely what makes the pods easy to dispose of in the separated waste collection: simply throw them in the organic waste after use, just like the coffee grounds left in the moka machine.
All in all, it’s easy enough to savour an excellent espresso just like the one you enjoy at the bar (but in an ultra-practical, handy single-portion) and, at the same time, have a clear conscience when it comes to the environment. Wondering whether to opt for pods or capsules? There’s no one right answer, it varies from coffee addict to coffee addict: discover how to choose the right coffee machine.
